Dr. Elliot R. Goodman was born in England and received his undergraduate and medical school education at Cambridge University. He moved to the USA in 1990 and trained in general surgery at Maimonides Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY from 1990 to 1996. He spent two years as a research fellow at Columbia University working with Mark Hardy, MD, in the field of cellular transplantation and immunology. During his fellowship, he presented his findings at various national and international meetings and published his work in many peer-reviewed journals.
Dr. Goodman joined the medical staff of Montefiore Medical Center and the surgical faculty of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in August of 1999. Before this, he was on the faculty of the New Jersey Medical School and was the co-director of the University Institute for the Surgery of Morbid Obesity. Dr. Goodman is an active member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons. His clinical interests include general and bariatric surgery. He has considerable research experience studying how immunosuppressive medications improve the success of organ transplants. Recently, however, his research laboratory has been focusing on identifying the exact proteins linking obesity to adult-onset (Type 2) diabetes.
