Ms. Almeida is a Registered Dietitian and holds a Masters in Food, Nutrition & Dietetics from New York University. She completed her nutrition internship at Mount Sinai Medical Center and worked as a clinical nutritionist at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center for four years, specializing in nutritional therapy for patients with diabetes, hyperlipidemia and cardiovascular disease. During this time, she also co-authored the chapters on nutrition for the “ Post Heart Transplant Guide.”
She holds a Certification in Diabetes Education and is a member of the American Association of Diabetes Educators. She is also a member of the Diabetes Care & Education Practice Group of the American Dietetic Association and the Food & Nutrition Council of Greater New York.
Kira provides Medical Nutrition Therapy as well as diabetes education to the Center’s diverse patient population. She works closely with the Director of Patient Services and the rest of the team to help patients achieve optimal metabolic control through nutrition, exercise, medical therapy and stress management. She is also involved in many of the Center’s research efforts that examine the role of family-centered diabetes care in the improvement of glycemic control.
Ms. Almeida has worked closely with some of Manhattan’s top chefs including Edward Brown of the SeaGrill to develop “diabetes friendly” recipes. She is also active in the development of both outpatient and community nutrition workshops relating to diabetes, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia.
